How to Stay Motivated when you’re Tired

I am writing this post on a lazy, rainy Sunday with my to-do list getting longer and longer by the second. My fiancé picked up an overtime shift at work so it’s just me and our dog here today at the house. And it’s almost noon and I have barely started my day.

I ended up going to bed really early and took some anxiety medication that knocked me out. I haven’t been able to shake the grogginess all morning and I’ve had, like, three cups of coffee. I sat outside in the cold for a little bit, I took a toasty shower, and then ended up falling back asleep on the bed after. So much for my productive morning.

I’ve finally managed to get dressed and start some laundry. I came on the computer to work on my blog, made a blog checklist, and instantly got overwhelmed by it. So instead of taking out small chunks of it or my home to-do list I’m sitting here writing a post on motivation hoping it will get me motivated.

I am tired.

I work a lot at my 9-5 job. I’m a jeweler. My commute to work is 35 minutes each way, I am learning a new skill that is using a lot of brain power, when I’m not learning on the bench I’m working on computer work and project management for my team, and we’re busy at work so I’m managing the stress of that. I come home from work after a 35 minute drive and there’s still things to be taken care of at the house. Cleaning, cooking, figuring out when we’re going to go to the grocery store. You know, normal home stuff.

Then I still have my blog and my Etsy store I’m trying to get up and running. Which keeps getting pushed to the weekend because I’m tired when I come home at almost 7:00 every night. This Saturday we had a ton of errands to do so I needed to get all of that done. Now, I’m in the prime time to work and I can’t shake off how tired I am.

So it’s time to search the internet and come up with ways to stay motivated so I can start working on things today. If not, they get pushed until next week and the cycle continues.

  1. Look at Motivational Quotes on Pinterest

This is probably my favorite thing to do while I am doom scrolling. If I’m on my phone anyway I might as well read some motivational quotes on Pinterest. My favorite thing to do is set one to my phone wallpaper so I have to look at it when I get on my phone.

2. Make a To-Do List

My to-do list is honestly never ending. I do like to take 3 things off the list and do them right away. Usually the easiest ones. Right now I have things like “change the scents in my wax warmers”. Something that’s fun and will take me two minutes. It gets something off my list and I get the satisfaction on highlighting it off.

3. Do the Cleaning First

I tend to get more things done when my house is clean. I’m working in my office right now that’s neat and organized so it’s a little easier to concentrate. But, I know that my sheets need to be changed and the bed needs to be made in the bedroom. My first load of laundry was my sheets so I can get them back on the bed and make that room neat too.

4. Don’t Work Laying Down

As much as I love laying on the couch with my laptop, I hardly ever get any work done there. I have to be sitting up at a desk, which is why I have an office. It’s easier for me to think and type if I am sitting in my office chair at a keyboard.

5. Remember Your “Why”

I really liked this blog post from It’s My Favorite Day. Kristal talks about how coming back to you “why”, your reason behind why you’re doing this, is the best way to stay motivated. My “why” on why I am working on my blog is to be a writer and to make a living running a blog, which is something I’ve always wanted to do.

Now that I’ve written this post I actually feel a bit more motivated to get up and start tackling my to-do list. I think the washer went off so I’m off to go switch over the load and sort the rest of our clothes.
